The first records of the use of Echinacea purpurea date back to Native American Indian tribes that used it to treat a wide variety of conditions ranging from snake bites to malignancies. In the middle of the 20th century, Echinacea was introduced as a medicinal plant to Europe where it has been used against infection and for stimulation of the immune response. The traditional mode of preparation as pressed juice from the aerial parts of the fresh plant was maintained.
Among the several medicinally used species belonging to the genus Echinacea (Asteraceae family), Echinacea purpurea L. is the mostly studied. Several meta-analyses support the use of preparations based on the aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea for the early treatment of colds.
The health effects of Echinacea on the upper respiratory tract have been suggested to result from its immunostimulatory and immunomodulatory activity, as underlying mechanisms of action.
